Graded in Adobe After Effects as DNG sequence and exported as Prores HQ for edit in Adobe Premiere.

A great demonstration of the capabilities of magic lantern 14 bit raw video with the 5d mark III. NO post sharpening was applied at all! Uploaded to here on Vimeo H.264 1080P target bit rat 32.000 with max 40,000. Canon 24-70 ii lens used. Regardless of the instability of the custom firmware, this is a HUGE game changer! Magic Lantern thank you again, a million times, most of us DON’T have hollywood budgets but long to be able to improve our art. A great day to be a magic lantern user with Canon in tow ;-)
Be sure to download the original upload which is in full 1080P.

Canon 5d Mark III RAW video skiing sample

Installed Magic Lantern the day before I went and shot some skiing at Mammoth Mountain for The Zap Lab and Teton Gravity Research. I snuck in a few shots in between shooting with the RED. Just for fun.

NOTE: This is not a scientific test, so do not expect to see charts, comparisons or anything of that nature.
Simple video shot to showcase the new 14bit RAW firmware hack by Magic Lantern. It is a stress test, since all original footage was purposely overexposed and underexposed 1, 2, 3+ stops. I wanted to see how much information and details I could bring back with simple color correction. Let me tell you something I’m very impressed.
I used the latest build and didn’t experience any problems while filming. I used Hoodman Steel 1000X 64GB CF card, which I think is the best CF card in terms of build quality and read/write speed for the RAW recording.
Shot: 1920 x 1080 at 24fps
Post workflow: RAW files-DNG Converter-AE-Basic CC-ProRes4444-FCP-Final output ProRes4444
Camera: Canon 5D Mark III with OLPF Filter removed
Lens: Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 L II, Genus Eclipse Vari ND Filter

Canon 5D MkIII RAW Video Test

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

A few shots from testing Magic Lantern’s new RAW video feature. Shot loads more but can’t convert files over 2Gb with RAW2DNG yet. This is such a nice feature to have, but so heavy to work with, let’s hope we find ways to streamline the process.
These shots are still a little soft since shot with my Dog Schidt Optiks FF58 and Iscorama adapter combo which isn’t the sharpest setup.
Oh and cancelled my Pocket BMC order this afternoon also. :)

Full frame sensor raw from the 5D Mark III is RGGB subsampled from the 6K CMOS then debayered in post to DNG raw format. DIGIC and internal debayer and compression is bypassed. I then used Adobe Camera Raw in After Effects to grade each DNG sequence, using the first frame as a reference. After that I rendered out the raw from After Effects to ProRes 422 and edited the final video in Premiere. I exported for Vimeo by heavily compressing the sequence to H.264 so please download the original DNG files here to get a truer idea of the sheer quality of raw video on the 5D Mark III. dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/18917388/EOSHD-5D-DNG-Anamorphic-3K.zip

Nothing short of amazing. Large data files, but we’ll see how it goes as people start adjusting their workflows and as Magic Lantern make continual improvements.

First use of Magic Lantern’s amazing raw video firmware on my Canon 5D MK III.
Using Transcend 600x cards at the moment so can’t get full 1080p yet in either 25p or 24p so this is 1280 x 540 24p
Had a play with grading in photoshop and using Alien Skin plugin to add some colour adjustments and grain back into the image.
5D MK III with 24-105mm f4 – shot at 105mm with IS on.
This was more a test for me to see sharpness rather than the dynamic range, although I had lots of scope to grade the final video.

5D MkIII RAW Video – Short Film Test Footage

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

A test of the Magic Lantern RAW video module for the Canon 5D MkIII, with human subjects and skin tones taken into consideration. Many of the RAW video tests we were able to find online only used household objects and landscapes as subjects, so we decided to shoot it in the same manner as we would a short film, with human subjects and lighting.
For a true look at the 5D MkIII’s RAW capabilities, download the video.
Camera: Canon 5D Mark III

Magic Lantern5D Mark II Raw Recording

In order to test of the firmware outdoors, I took some shots taken in Alicante, Spain. Even though the workflow is time-consuming, It really makes a differece. Alicante is called the “city of light”, the light is harsh at noon. With raw recording, it is easier to capture more light in difficult contrasty situations.
Congratulations Magic Lantern team!
Shot at 1880×720 (this is the best I could do with my 400x SanDisk CF card).
Lens used: Canon 24-105mm, Canon 85mm f.14, Samyang 35mm
For macro shots I used an extension tube.

Moire test with RAW recording

Moire test with RAW recording on Canon 5D Mark II in RAW mode with Maginc Lantern Alpha RAW recorder. Trying to see the processing difference using the native 1X and 5X modes (wich should give 1:1 pixel zoom). Used for the test Canon 100mm macro and Canon 24-85 – both stopped at 5.6 and the second zoomed to resemble the frame of the 100mm. Yet on the right some moire is stil present it is less. Conclusions at the MAgic Lantern Forum.

RAW on Canon T3i
I had no intent to put a video together while shooting this test, but there is only a hand full of T3i RAW out there so what a heck?
Workflow:
.RAW -> .DNG (after effects) -> Apple ProRes 4444 -> .MP4
SPECS:
Lens: Olympus 50mm f/1.8
ISO 100
Basic Color Correction, No Sharpness added in post.
Shot at 1120×400 @ 23.98 fps in a rainy day
All handheld (no kidding ¬¬). Had a bit trouble to stabilise the image with the extra crop…
Shot in São Paulo, Brazil.

Outreach event in Salinas Valley State Prison – Shot on Canon 600D T3i raw with Magic Lantern

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

Here are a few shots from a prison ministry outreach event held Saturday, May 18 at Salinas Valley State Prison in California. Prison Fellowship brought in a team of more than 30 volunteers to minister to inmates in the level 4 maximum security area of Salinas Valley prison. It was a great day.
I shot just a few shots that day in raw as a test. Shot in 960×500 resolution raw on a Canon t3i (600D) using Magic Lantern firmware. Lens: Tokina 11-16mm F2.8. ISO: 200 Aperture: F3.2. Genus Variable ND filter. Sorry the sound doesn’t match up – I used sound recorded earlier in the day on a Zoom H4n and used it with these clips.
Workflow – I used dng2raw from Magic Lantern to convert the raw files to dng files on my MacBookPro. I opened the dng files in Adobe Photoshop CS 5.5, applied basic settings, and saved as TIFF files. Opened the image sequence in Quicktime 7. Exported as ProRes HQ movie. Edited the ProResHQ movies in Premiere Pro CS 5.5, exported as a ProRes HQ movie, uploaded to Vimeo.

Canon 50D

I didn’t know they were even doing the Canon 50D – but this is short burst video…

Can't see the video in your RSS reader or email? Click Here!

A short test of Burst mode DNG RAW wit the Canon 50D. The early part of the video compares it to h.264. There’s no grading on either video on the first h.264 vs RAW comparison.
-Canon 50D
-Canon EF-S 18-200 IS F3.5
-No other lighting other than lamp
-Two-Tone & Grayscale grades were made in Adobe Camera RAW in After Effects CS6
-Exported to Apple ProRes 444 and edited in Final Cut Pro 7
